Julen Lopetegui: 'I did have an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers'

The new Spain boss was very nearly the new man at Molineux

Julen Lopetegui, manager of FC Porto

For weeks Wolves fans have been busy googling Julen Lopetegui after Spanish football correspondent Guillem Balagu claimed he would replace Kenny Jackett as head coach.

Balague claimed that the 49-year-old former Porto boss was the choice of the Chinese consortium taking over at Wolves. It seems Balague's claims that the Robin Li fronted consortium were the buyers, were somewhat innacurate.

Whether they were involved at all, remains a mystery.

It seems though that Lopetegui's involvement was indeed genuine, and he simply chose Spain over Wolves.

The following quotes attributed to Lopetegui were posted on the Twitter page of Mirror journalist, Alex Richards.

Jorge Mendes is thought to be heavily involved in the Molineux takeover and Lopetegui was very much involved in his vision for the project at Molineux.

Speculation surrounding the future of Kenny Jackett has raged on since the takeover, he has maintained a dignified stance and got on with business as usual.

It seems that the Fosum consortium were ready to go with Lopetegui.
What is also apparent is that Kenny Jackett is at this stage, the only head coach that Wolves do have and will be expected to be in charge for the Port Vale game on Saturday.

That could all change if Jackett or the Wolves hierarchy decide enough is enough and clarity is needed, the fans certainly would welcome that stance. The timing of the announcements can be no surprise, the Spain appointment seemingly forced the hand of the club.

If a new manager was to be announced, it would have been the perfect time to present him alongside a new owner.

That decision has now been taken away from them.
