Dickson receives certificate of return

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state yesterday received Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner of the governorship election by the INEC after scoring over 134,000 votes against his closest rival and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, who polled over 86,000 votes.

Presenting the certificate, the Supervising National Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mustapha Leki, said the presentation was in accordance with the laws setting up the INEC.

The National commissioner, who lauded the leadership of the electoral body in Bayelsa state, security agencies and corps members for conducting transparent polls, maintained that the introduction of card reader machines had improved the electoral processes and reduced fraud in the system.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Dickson, who said power came from the Almighty God, dedicated the certificate and his victory to God. The Governor, who was accompanied by his wife, Rachel Dickson, his Deputy John Jonah and top officials of the PDP,  equally dedicated the victory to the souls those who were injured or killed during the political violence that marred the governorship election.

He thanked the electorates for voting him into power for the second term, stating that with their performance, democracy has come to stay in the state. “From what you people of Bayelsa state has done, you have shown that democracy will continue to flourish in Nigeria. “By what you have done, you have shown that our nation cannot be one party state,” the elated governor stated.
