The killings of law enforcement officers in Kansas City, Dallas and Baton Rouge are bringing people across the country together.
Hundreds of people lined the St. Bernard Parish Courthouse steps to honor the lives lost.
"It's just really upsetting to see this going on," Linda Roig said. "We do have a son who works for the St. Bernard Police Department. It does worry us a lot."
Roig was one of the many who came out to show support through candlelight and prayer.
"Don't worry about color," Constance Garbriel said. "That's what most people wonder is the color. It's not the color. You cut your hand, you (and I) are going (to) bleed alike."
The community organized the vigil Sunday after the news broke of the killings in Baton Rouge.
St. Bernard Sheriff Jimmy Pholmann and his deputies were at the vigil.
"The police officers was hunted down by cold-blooded killers," Pholmann said.
As Roig and the rest of her community try to make sense of what happened, they stick together.
"It hit home when it happened in Baton Rouge," Roig said. "It's too close to home. It is sad for all the officers that are getting killed all over the nation. When it gets close to home it's kind of scary."
People who attended the vigil wrote letters to local law enforcement which will be distributed in the next few days.
