Orlando, Florida mayor, Buddy Dyer just confirmed in a press conference that the mass shooting that took place on June 12 left 50 dead and another 53 injured in what has become the deadliest in American history.
The suspect, is reportedly, Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen who may have been an Islamic extremist. His parents were born in Afghanistan according to developing reports. Officials have not yet made an official declaration of Mateen's background or other identifying information. Local police and FBI agents are still pursuing multiple leads.
The Florida council on American-Islamic relations released the follwing statement shortly after the tragedy unfolded. “We condemn this monstrous attack and offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those killed or injured.
The Muslim community joins our fellow Americans in repudiating anyone or any group that would claim to justify or excuse such an appalling act of violence.”
