The chambers in a statement signed by Olusegun Odubela, partner and head of chambers, denied that Tarfa obstructed investigation adding that he was only carrying out his professional duties when the ‘unconstitutional arrest and incarceration occurred’.

”For the avoidance of doubt, we need to put it in the public domain that contrary to the blatant lies dished out by the EFCC, Mr. R. Tarfa (SAN) was at the Lagos High Court in continuation of his professional duty to defend his clients Gnahouse Sonrou Nazaire and Senoue Modeste.”

Odubela said that the government needs to be pitied because the crusade against corruption is gradually being derailed by fifth columnists bent on setting the legal profession on a needless collision course with the government.

He called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), human rights groups and all Nigerians to join in condemning this resort to ‘gestapo like breach of counsel’s professional privilege and rights to protection in court  premises while discharging their duty as counsel.’

Odubela said the action of the EFCC makes a mockery of the legal profession.
He said. “There is no law that justifies the vindictive arrest of a person in the court premises, more so a minister in the temple of justice, just as no law supports the arrest of a legislator in the hallowed chambers of the legislature,” the statement said in part.
