Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Perry Calderwood, has said that Nigerian students studying in Canada are worthy ambassadors of their country, saying as at 2014, over 8,600 Nigerians were studying in Canada.
He added that the number had grown rapidly from just over 800 in 2002.
The envoy made this known on Wednesday in Abuja at the official inauguration of the 12th Canada Education Fair in the country.
'Canada has thriving relations with Nigeria and one of our most interesting areas of engagement is the education sector", the envoy said, adding that Nigerians are one of the fastest growing groups of students who go to study in Canada - representing the 8th largest source of foreign students.
He added that the presence of Nigerian students in many parts of Canada and its educational institutions has enriched the society.
'Generally well-regarded, Nigerian students in Canada are worthy ambassadors of their country. They enrich Canada’s educational institutions and each of them represents a new link between our two countries that helps to build further the ties that unite us', he added.
He stated further that the High Commission is committed to facilitating increased educational partnerships with Nigeria, which he said can include joint research projects, curriculum development and also technical and vocational training.
He promised that the High Commission Service will work with the Colleges & Institutes, Canada (CICan), to host a seminar in Lagos on possible partnerships in technical and vocational education.
